Boat Trim Tabs
Installation of trim tabs will make your boat perform better and allow you to level the load on the fly. Trim tabs are often overlooked as an accessory. Trim tabs are mounted on the transom of the boat, usually one on each side. Trim tabs are important because as a boat moves forward it builds up a wall of water in front of it. The wall of water has to be overcome with power. Extra power drains off speed and costs you in fuel and time. Trim tabs can be adjusted to cause the boat to "plane" so that the boat is in a profile that it will perform well at. Trim tabs also help with vision, since the boat has a lower profile to the water you can see more of what is in front of you. Trim tabs are ajusted in small increments. After each adjustment the pilot can check performance and adjust again as needed. If the boat is listing, the tabs can be adjusted independently to compensate.
Marine Air Conditioning
Installing an AC unit in your boat is not as difficult as you might think. Installation of a marine air conditioner unit in your boat may be easier than you think. You can even purchase a portable unit that you roll onboard, put the pump in the water, plug it in and away you go. Self contained marine air conditioners are much like window air conditioning for residential use, the difference is the unit also uses a water pump to transfer heat making them more efficient. Component marine air conditioning systems are much like forced air systems that contractors install in homes. This type of installation can be quite involved. The require ducting work, plumbing and through hull installation of the water source for the water pump. Some marine air conditioners also provide heat and will dehumidify your cabin. The thermostat controls are remote and can be set to stabilize the temperature in the cabin to within a couple of degrees. Once you set them up you will have stable cabin temperatures and humidity.

Marine Instruments
Weather stations now come in wireless versions so you do not have to run cables from the sensors to the control panel. Typical Weather stations offer the capability to collect and report on barometric pressure, outside humidity and dew point, daily and yearly rainfall, wind speed and direction, wind chill, outside temperature. Some have other features as well. Wireless units have the ability to transmit the data from the sensor to the weather control station without any wires. They send the signal to the control unit via radio signals. The Davis Vantage Pro will send the signal as far as 1000 feet. Data on the unit is updated in between two to ten seconds so you can really zero in on rapidly changing conditions such as wind speed and direction. These units also allow the user to set alarms so you don't have to constantly monitor the weather, you simply set an alarm and go about your business.
Marine Safety Equipment
An Emergency Position Indecating Radiobeacon is required equipment and can save your life. EPIRB's come in several flavors. The US Coast Guard and the FCC now recommend newer Category I EPIRB's which are 406/121.5 MHZ. Float-free, automatically activated EPIRB. These units are detectable by satellite anywhere in the world. EPIRB's come in several flavors, some activated manually and some activate automatically when they come in contact with water.
An EPIRB sends a signal to a satellite which in turn notifies a monitoring station in Washington DC (for the US). The distress information including the EPIRB's location is then forwarded to emergency personnel closest to the distress signal origin. Some of the newer EPIRB's have built-in GPS receivers (GPIRB's) and will transmit the GPS coordinates to the satellite for a more precise location.
